You're probably checking out this place because you've seen pictures elsewhere of Dolly Sods: a high, rolling plateau meadow criss-crossed with beautiful streams, clusters of trees and spectacular open vistas. You're probably checking out this place because you're hoping that you can drive in and eat your lunch at a table that will let you experience Dolly Sods without hiking.
I've visited many parks across the US from Arches to the Everglades and this one gets the nofarios title of the worst maintain park in America! The roads are all dirt and are so bad it makes travel across the park impossible. The trails all have the same info sign that's tells you alsoutely nothing. The dam thing doesn't ever have trails on it!?!? It's a sign of the roads of the park, that's so dam helpful since the park has one straight crappy road that goes nowhere! Don't visit this park. There noting to see that worth all the pain of getting here. Just another Mt. with rocks on top. (Dolly Sods, You suck) I will never return....
Unfortunately, this is not that place. After spending 30 minutes — or many, many more — driving up terribly washboarded gravel roads, you'll arrive at a small roadside clearing with three picnic tables, a vault toilet, and a view of nothing but the same trees you've seen on the drive up. The meadows and their expansive views are no less than an hour's uphill hike away. Dolly Sods Wilderness is amazing and beautiful. This picnic area isn't.
