Only 2.5 hours from Metro Washington, this is a unique and magical place I've returned to many times over the last 30 years. It spoils you, the extraordinary variety of terrains, flora and fauna. Open plains of brilliant blueberries, spruce and hardwoods, there is beauty in every square foot of this place. Lichen and moss, grasses and native wildflowers vary from the open plains (sods) to the dense spruce and rhododendron forests. The streams throughout the Dolly Sods Wilderness, as a result of the shelf-like geology of the rock (for lack of a scientific desc.) create wonderful multi-level waterfalls with caves behind the falls.

The other great sights in this area are Bear Rocks, always worth a walkabout and the stunning and dramatic Seneca Rocks. There are numerous cabin rentals, campground, tee pees, motel rooms, etc. at every price point (lower scale, of course).

Beautiful scenery, but difficult rocky terrain.

Great place to experience. We backpackers the northern section, Bear Rocks area at the oncoming of Fall. SEPT 22 and really the colors were past peak so go little earlier in my opinion. NO problems there but do pay attention to your water supply and resources.

Good place for hiking. You can camp any place you'd like. Spectacular views of mountains, rivers. The place is popular and it can be busy during long weekends.

IMHO, this area of West Virginia is one of the most beautiful places on the East coast, rivaling (rather complementing) Bar Harbor, ME. It's always the first place I think of when I want to hike, camp, climb, or just hang out in an area with absolutely no cell service, no internet and no TV channels.

My first place to backpack and it holds a special place in my heart. The Sods never disappoints and every mile is a different story. Beautiful.
